Is this a good fit?

Not every tutor and student are a good match. A few minutes here can save us both time.

I'm a teaching tutor

I help you understand the material. I don't do homework, complete graded work, take quizzes or exams, or supply answers to be handed in as yours. We work practice problems together so you can do the real ones yourself.

Who I tutor

I'll tutor anyone who wants to be tutored. My only requirement is that the student makes an effort to learn, and any effort is enough.

  • Students who are far behind but trying. Falling behind is not a character flaw. We find the gap and fix it.
  • Students who struggle hard. Some students work very hard and the material still doesn't come easily. I keep those students without reservation. The question is effort, never ability.
  • Strong students who want depth. If you already do well and want to understand the whats and whys, I'm glad to go there with you.
  • Students who are anxious about math. That's very common, and it usually means you care.

What I'll expect

  • Attempt the work before the session, and bring your questions.
  • Bring your textbook and class notes (here's why).
  • Practice between sessions. There's no substitute for practice.

When I stop tutoring a student

Sometimes a student sits down with me with no questions and repeats the same mistakes session after session. They're hoping for a magic bullet that lets them understand without effort. That doesn't exist. When that happens I'll say so, to the student and to the parents, with encouragement first and honesty always. If nothing changes, I'll recommend we stop, because it isn't a good use of your money or our time. You will never be surprised by this.

The best outcome

The best compliment I can receive is a student saying "I don't need you anymore." One of my trigonometry students simply stopped rebooking after a few weeks, and her mother told me she felt bad about it. I told her it was fine, and that I was glad her daughter didn't need help anymore. To me, that is success.
